corskey Posted August 30, 2004 Report Posted August 30, 2004 I've been getting an error warning recently where the display shows "ENGINE WORKSHOP" and at the same time the glowplug symbol flashes. There is no loss of power and everything seems to run normally. any ideas on what it could be?? Quote
Ivor_E_Tower Posted August 30, 2004 Report Posted August 30, 2004 (1) Check that your brakelights are working, or (2) Engine management fault. Quote
corskey Posted August 31, 2004 Author Report Posted August 31, 2004 I did notice last night that the cruise control doesn't work when this message is flashing. I don't know if this is the cause of the warning or a symptom of something else. Quote
Tigger Posted August 31, 2004 Report Posted August 31, 2004 Could be the brake light switch. . Just wonder if it is arching and staying on. This happened to me after about 30 mins driving . On the last beast we had.Turn engine off and on at it was Ok again! Quote
corskey Posted August 31, 2004 Author Report Posted August 31, 2004 Just checked brake lights again - they are not working co it could be that this is part of the fault 1. Warning message flashes 2. No Brake lights3. No Cruise control I wonder how 2 and 3 are linked Corskey Quote
Guest fredt Posted August 31, 2004 Report Posted August 31, 2004 The brake light switch is part of the control circuit for the cruise control, on the TDI's the cruise control is part of the engine management system, so I would imagine that as one of its control sensors is down it would bring up a engine check warning Quote
corskey Posted August 31, 2004 Author Report Posted August 31, 2004 Bloody hell, some good and accurate diagonistics here. I was expecting only abuse :( :( considering my initial poor description of the problem. I've booked it into the local ford dealership for repair - I just hope that they can diagnose the problem as easily. Corskey Quote
Bigpaul Posted July 10, 2008 Report Posted July 10, 2008 Ive got the same warning (glow plug) and it comes on with brake warning light. cc works fine. What is the brake switch that people mentiopn as a possible cause. Where is it located and is it easy enough to check??? Thanks in advance Quote
big_kev Posted July 10, 2008 Report Posted July 10, 2008 Its above the brake pedal , there are two of them usually one black and one blue. I can't remember which is which...its the one that doesn't work your brake lights that is the usual culprit. very easy to change they are on a bayonet fitting. usually cheaper from VW or Seat than Fords.....its a VW part. ronz Posted September 25, 2008 Report Posted September 25, 2008 Hi All, I had this problem, paniced thinking there is an engine fault. Anyway it was a simple mistake anyone could make, I had changed the brake light for a fog light they look identical i only noticed after looking at the side and nticing it was 4W instead of the 5W it should be. Hope this helps people. Quote
Bayleaf Posted November 4, 2008 Report Posted November 4, 2008 Thanks ronz. Where else would google find "Galaxy", "Engine workshop" and "glow plug" on the same page?I did exactly the same on Sunday - put a Halfords type 482 bulb in the brake light instead of a type 480. Simple mistake - same size, same fitting, and both are quoted the the Halfords bulb guide. On Monday (in the rain) my wife had to call out the RAC due to the warnings and flashing lights. As some of them were red, the RAC said it wasn't safe to drive. Thanks to your post, when the RAC man arrived she was able to point him straight to the problem. A new (correct) bulb and the problem went away. Except the battery had gone flat by then, but it is 7 years old - time for a new one me thinks. Thanks again. Bayleaf Quote

galaxybox Posted September 6, 2011 Report Posted September 6, 2011 Same issue happened to me tonight. With engine approaching 110K , I thought it was going to be diesel injectors or something. Can believe its such a simple solution, especially when manual talks about flashing coil being engine fault. Great Forum . Thanks Quote
